Our client, a key player in the energy industry specialising in hydrogen production and distribution, is seeking a highly skilled Electrical Engineer to lead electrical engineering activities at a hydrogen plant. This is a permanent, full-time role with a hybrid working model, combining office-based work with on-call support. The engineer will be pivotal in maintaining safety, compliance, and reliability across the facility's electrical systems, ensuring it operates efficiently within the evolving energy landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the electrical technical authority for HV and LV systems, setting standards and approving deviations.
- Lead on electrical statutory compliance, maintaining registers and delivering procedures, training, and audits for EAWR, DSEAR/UKEX, and BS 7671.
- Develop and maintain safety rules for electrical systems, including permits to work, isolation procedures, and competency management in line with HSG85.
- Design and verify HV and LV distribution systems, including protection coordination, earthing strategies, and switching schedules.
- Ensure hazardous areas involving hydrogen meet IEC/BS EN 60079 standards, performing HAC assessments, selecting Ex equipment, and defining EPL classifications.
- Implement asset management frameworks, reliability programmes, and risk-based maintenance strategies, enhancing plant performance and safety.
- Support operations through fault analysis, trip investigations, and troubleshooting; lead electrical input during HAZID/HAZOP and risk assessments.
- Manage vendors and contractors, ensuring certification, test packs, and technical documentation meet UKEX/ATEX and BS standards.
Job Requirements:
- Significant experience in electrical engineering within the energy, power, or heavy industry sectors, particularly with HV/LV, Ex installations, and hydrogen or gas distribution facilities.
- Deep understanding of electrical law, guidance, and wiring regulations (EAWR, BS 7671 18th Edition), alongside expertise in hazardous area classification and Ex equipment.
- Proven track record in designing, inspecting, and maintaining electrical systems in hazardous environments, including compliance with IEC/BS EN 60079 and DSEAR standards.
- Experience with safety management, permits to work, and technical authority roles such as Authorised Person or Authorising Engineer scheme.
- Ability to lead reliability and asset management programmes, including RCM, FMEA, and preventive maintenance in complex plant environments.
- Strong knowledge of hydrogen safety standards (ISO 15916, ISO 22734, ISO 19880-1) and electrical integration within hydrogen electrolyser and fuelling systems.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work across teams and with external partners.
- Relevant degrees and professional certifications, including BS 7671 qualifications and additional safety-related training (CompEx, DSEAR assessment training, NEBOSH Process Safety).
